Summer Days Container
Garden
Size Matters
This red, white, and blue bounty was designed to fill a large pot -- one holding
up to 25 gallons of mix. Your container can be smaller, but should be large
enough to stand out in a crowd. Larger pots are easier to take care of because
they need less frequent watering.
For
a basic, no-fail container-garden recipe, think about arranging a class photo.
Place the tall plants (such as the daisies) at the back, the average-height
flowers (such as geraniums) in the middle, and the shortest ones (such as
trailing Calibrachoa) in the front.
This
jumbo container garden puts on a patriotic show of red, white and blue.
The Garden
The Plant
White
daisies with yellow centers (Argyranthemum 'Single White') dominate the back
of the container. This relative of the yellow marguerite can grow up to 3 feet
tall. The threadlike, blue-green foliage is attractive in its own right.
Lipstick
red geraniums (Pelargonium x hortorum 'Designer Cherry') provide a contrast
to the daisies in color, flower form, and leaf shape.
The
tiny, white petals of bacopa (Sutera cordata) -- barely visible among the red
and blue Calibrachoa -- are dotted throughout the arrangement. The flowers and
small fleshy leaves add another dimension of texture to the arrangement.
Calibrachoa
'Celebration Rose' and 'Celebration Blue' offer masses of small, petunia-like
flowers. The plant's trailing habit helps lengthen the garden and hides the
rim of the container.
